This Day in Rock and Roll History

1999 - Curtis Mayfield, a pioneer of American soul music who penned some of the most lasting songs of the 1960s and ’70s, dies at a hospital in Roswell, Ga. He was 57 years old.

1970 - George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” becomes the first Beatles solo single to top the Billboard Hot 100. Five years later, a New York state judge would find Harrison guilty of copyright infringement for plagiarizing the Chiffon’s 1963 hit, “He’s So Fine”.

1968 - Led Zeppelin gives its U.S. debut performance in Boston.
